Next week, this oldest girl of mine will celebrate the reading of Little House on the Prairie with a day of good, old-fashioned fun. Her class at school will visit a log cabin, play games and make crafts from the pioneer era, sing prairie songs, and even eat lunches of corn bread, bacon, cheese, potatoes and other Little House fixin's.
So, of course, she needed a new dress for the occasion!
After blowing the dust off of my sewing machine (ahem), I set out to make a prairie girl dress using McCall's 9424. I was thrilled to come upon a couple of quiet hours to myself which resulted in some speedy progress.
I'm pleased to say that the first part of the dress turned out just fine!
(The best news is that she really likes it!)
I still need to add a button here and there and then move onto making the pinafore. Stay tuned for the completed costume and other goings on from prairie day festivities!

Beautiful dress - I love it! Meredith's going to be a pioneer girl for Halloween, and she's having a pioneer birthday party next month. So the dust's been blown off my sewing machine, too :)

Oh, she looks beautiful in her prairie dress you sewed. Doesn't it make you sometimes wish children still dressed like this every day?
Thank you so much for sharing this on our post of pioneer project ideas. Lovely!

I don't think all the moms are making them...but since I sew I couldn't resist!

So sweet! I remember 'old fashioned days' at school when I was a girl. We raced hula hoops by hitting them with a stick, making them roll! I had a great dress my mom made and wore my hair in braids looped up in the old-fashioned was ... fun memories and a GREAT way for kids to learn!

This is wonderful, Kristen. And the colors are perfect. Will you make a bonnet an apron too? Probably too much too soon. So glad Rylen likes it!

What a wonderful dress! I need you to come and teach me to sew! ;) I would love to go on that field trip! I still have my set of Little House on the Praire books!

That is by far the best prairie costume ever! She will have such a blessed time. If you or your husband can swing, you must go to the sing-along. I can't wait to see the finished product.
