My two big girls began summer with time away at camp. This was not the first year for either of them to go away, so it made the process of packing them up, saying goodbye, dropping them off and leaving them behind that much easier for both them and their mama! I knew they were safe, in good hands, and well-prepared for what the week would bring....heat, humidity, dirt, mud, an endless stream of mosquitoes and other lovely little critters lurking about their cabins and bunks.
From my own memory of summer camp, one of the most popular times of the day was "mail call" and apparently that hasn't changed much. We made sure our two were well-showered with letters and packages just so they remembered us back here in the midst of all the fun they were having!
And though we never got a letter back (sigh), it made me smile an extra smile when Rylen told me that she slept with her notes from home right under her pillow. (It's so nice to know they missed us!)
Some of the first reports we got when we picked them up...
"I didn't shower once." (Really, she didn't.)
"My favorite part was sliding in the mud!"
"The first day I ate two ice cream sandwiches, one cupcake, two rice krispie treats and a ring pop."
"There is something I can only tell Daddy." (Uh oh, not what a mama wants to hear. This just goes to show you who they deem to be the most understanding about gross camp games which turned out to be eating a mix of soda out of someone else's mouth. Yuck!)
"It was so burning hot but I snuggled under my sleeping bag anyway because it was cozy like home." (My personal favorite :)
They are now home, they are safe and clean. The laundry is done, and the suitcases are aired out and put away. Whew! The only evidences left of camp are the bug bite scabs that are everywhere on them. But they don't care a bit. They are so brave and tough, these two girls of mine!
