This year, for the first time, we joined a CSA (community-supported agriculture). Every Saturday from the end of May until mid-October, we headed to a local farm market where the farm we supported set up shop. We would grab our share of produce and eggs, browse a bit at the other booths, and then head home to see what produce awaited us for the week.
It was great fun and a fine way to support our local farmers, all the while receiving organically-grown produce at a bulk rate. Nothing short of a true win-win!
The family that runs our CSA opened up their farm on a recent weekend for a fall festival. It was fun exploring the very land that our produce had come from, and very interesting to learn about the different techniques they use to ensure a bountiful harvest. (Even after a summer as dry as the one we just had!)
This day in the country was a true treat for us suburban-ites. Lots of appreciation was gained for the hard, unpredictable work behind each berry, and the care given to each individual pepper plant or stalk of corn. We are very grateful for our farmers and all they do for us!
